Chingford Foundation School

Jack Petchey Award Success for Derrick

Derrick was nominated by the Design Technology department, though he could just as easily have been nominated by any number of departments due to the positive impact he has made across the school.

Derrick consistently makes a difference both within the school and the wider community through the many roles and activities he is involved in. As Head Prefect, he has supported other students and set a strong example through his leadership. In his role as a mentor to Year 8 students, he has helped younger pupils feel more confident and supported in their lessons.

As a House Leader, Derrick played a key role in organising a charity event inspired by the game show The Chase, which raised over £100. Reflecting on the experience, Derrick described it as “really rewarding because it showed what teamwork and effort can achieve”.

Outside of school, Derrick has been training in karate for nine years and is currently working towards achieving his black belt next summer. He also supports younger students at his dojo, helping them develop their skills and confidence. In addition, Derrick has successfully completed both his Bronze and Silver Duke of Edinburgh Awards, experiences which have strengthened his perseverance and leadership skills.

Derrick has also taken part in the ORBYTS science programme, giving him the opportunity to explore academic research and teamwork in a professional setting.

Derrick is a fantastic member of the school and the Chingford community, and he fully deserves this Jack Petchey Award. In his own words:

I always try to challenge myself, support others, and contribute wherever I can. I’m proud of what I’ve achieved so far and I’m motivated to keep improving
